Tozeur

The Jérid oasis of date palms and patterned brick architecture

South-West Desert

The capital of the Jérid, Tozeur is an oasis on the edge of the vast Chott el-Jérid, Tunisia's largest salt lake. Its palm grove, watered for centuries by an ingenious water-sharing system, forms a true forest of date palms, under which grow fig trees, pomegranates and vegetables. This is home to the famous deglet nour dates, the "fingers of light".

The old town, the Ouled el-Hadef quarter, is one of the finest architectural ensembles in the south. Its narrow lanes are lined with facades of fired clay bricks laid in geometric patterns, a craft typical of the Jérid. Tozeur is also the birthplace of Abou el-Kacem Chebbi, the national poet whose verses appear in the Tunisian anthem. A stroll through these shaded lanes in the cooler hours is enough to capture the soul of the town.

Around the oasis, the scenery changes dramatically within a short drive: the mountain oases of Chebika, Tamerza and Midès near the Algerian border, mirages over the chott, film sets among the dunes of Ong Jemel. Tozeur makes an ideal base for exploring the south-west, as long as you respect the desert and its safety rules. Here, every outing needs preparing: water, fuel and advice from locals are all part of the journey.

What to see and do

The Ouled el-Hadef medina

Lose yourself in this old quarter with its brick facades sculpted into geometric patterns. In the morning, the light brings out every detail of the walls.

The palm grove

Explore the palm grove on foot, by bike or by horse-drawn carriage to discover gardens layered in the shade of the palms. The irrigation channels reflect water management passed down over centuries.

Chott el-Jérid

The road across this huge salt lake reveals lunar landscapes of salt crust, sometimes tinged with pink, and mirages on hot days. Sunrise here is especially spectacular.

The mountain oases

Chebika, Tamerza and Midès sit in the hills close to the Algerian border, with springs, waterfalls and canyons. The old villages abandoned after the 1969 floods give them a unique atmosphere.

Ong Jemel and the film sets

This camel-head-shaped rock overlooks dunes that served as a backdrop for several films, including Star Wars and The English Patient. It is reached by four-wheel drive with a guide.

Dar Chraït

This museum, set in a traditional-style residence, displays costumes, old objects and scenes of past life in southern Tunisia. A useful visit for understanding Jérid culture.

Our tips

  • Taste deglet nour dates right in the oasis, especially during the autumn harvest when they are at their freshest.
  • For desert tracks and Ong Jemel, go with a local guide and never head off paved roads alone.
  • Always keep a supply of water in the car, even for short drives, and fill up the tank before leaving town.
  • Visit the medina and oases early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the heat and enjoy the best light.
  • On the Chott el-Jérid road, stay on the tarmac: the salt crust can hide muddy, unstable ground.
