Why rent a car
With a car you can freely combine beaches, medinas and ancient sites, set off early to enjoy the morning light and stop wherever you like: a hilltop village, a weekly market, a cove by the roadside.
It is especially convenient for areas less well served by public transport, such as Cap Bon, the North-West around Tabarka or the South, between Matmata, Douz and Tozeur.
Where to pick up your car
The car can usually be handed over when you land at the airport, which saves you an extra transfer. Depending on the rental company, delivery to a town office or to your accommodation is also possible in the main cities.
Returning the car somewhere other than the pick-up point may be possible, subject to the rental company's terms: mention it when you send your request.
- Tunis-Carthage Airport
- Enfidha-Hammamet Airport
- Monastir Airport
- Djerba-Zarzis Airport
- Tozeur-Nefta Airport
- Town offices, depending on the rental company's availability
Which vehicle to choose
The right vehicle depends on your route, the number of passengers and your luggage. For a coastal tour or city driving, a small car is often enough and is easier to park in narrow streets.
For the South and unpaved tracks, ask the rental company for advice: some roads are fine for a standard car, while others call for a higher vehicle or a 4x4.
- City car, handy in town and for two people
- Compact or saloon, for more comfort on long drives
- People carrier or family car, for groups and luggage
- SUV or 4x4, for the southern regions depending on your plans
Documents usually required
Required documents vary between rental companies. The items below are usually requested; check the exact terms, including minimum age, how long you must have held your licence, deposit, insurance and mileage, when you book.
- A valid driving licence
- An identity card or passport
- A credit card in the main driver's name
Tips for driving in Tunisia
Tunisia drives on the right. The main network of motorways and national roads is generally in good condition, but driving can be livelier than you are used to, especially in towns and at roundabouts.
For the rules in force, check with the rental company and official sources before you set off.
- Watch out for pedestrians, scooters, carts and animals, especially outside towns
- Respect speed limits and police checkpoints, which are common on main roads
- Avoid driving on minor roads at night where possible
- Fill up before crossing sparsely populated areas in the South
- Keep the vehicle papers and your licence within easy reach
