Where to stay in Tunisia
A guesthouse in a medina, a hotel right on the beach or a camp amid the dunes: choosing the right area matters as much as choosing the hotel. Here's where to stay in each town, depending on how you like to travel.
Types of accommodation
Dars and guesthouses
Restored traditional houses built around a courtyard, in the medinas of Tunis, Hammamet, Sousse and Kairouan, or on Djerba (houch and menzel). Full of charm, with a personal welcome.

Desert camps
Berber tents or bungalows amid the dunes around Douz and Ksar Ghilane, often with dinner and breakfast.

- In July and August, book several weeks ahead, especially on the coast and in Djerba.
- Out of season, many beach hotels close or scale back their services: check opening dates.
- A tourist tax may be added to your bill, charged per person per night.
- In the medinas, the lanes are often pedestrianised: ask where to park and whether someone can help with your luggage.
